Data from prospective clinical studies of intra-articular polyacrylamide hydrogel for knee osteoarthritis. Bliddal H, et al. A Prospective Study of Polyacrylamide Hydrogel Injection for Knee Osteoarthritis: Results from 5 Years After Treatment. Presented at WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2025. See also: Bliddal H, et al. A new generation of knee injection.
Arthrosamid is a 2.5% polyacrylamide hydrogel. Once injected it doesn't simply float in the joint fluid like older treatments. It meshes with the synovial tissue lining the knee, softening it, restoring elasticity, and easing the inflammation that drives osteoarthritis pain.
The result is a one time, surgery free treatment with pain relief shown to be sustained 5 years after a single injection.
Clinically proven
20+ years of research.
Backed by prospective studies showing significant pain reduction maintained at 5 years.
Long lasting
One injection, years of relief.
A single dose integrates with the synovial lining. No repeat courses. No top up appointments.
No surgery
Out patient. Local anaesthetic.
No general anaesthesia, no overnight stay, no surgical recovery period.
Same day
In and out the same day.
Most patients return to gentle daily activities within 24 to 48 hours.
From first consultation to lasting relief , in four simple steps.
- 1
Consultation & assessment
A consultant orthopaedic surgeon confirms knee osteoarthritis with examination and imaging, and discusses whether Arthrosamid® is right for you.
- 2
Preparation
Antibiotics are given ahead of the procedure. The knee is cleaned and a local anaesthetic numbs the injection site.
- 3
A single injection
Arthrosamid® is injected once into the knee joint, often with ultrasound guidance for precision. A small plaster covers the site.
- 4
Integration & relief
Over 6 to 12 weeks the hydrogel meshes with the synovial tissue lining the joint, softening it, restoring elasticity and easing pain.
Arthrosamid® vs. the alternatives.
Most knee injections wear off within months. Knee replacement means major surgery. Here's how Arthrosamid® sits between them.
| Compared on | Arthrosamid® | Hyaluronic acid (HA) | Steroid injection | Knee replacement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number of treatments | One injection | 3 to 5 injections per course | Repeat every 3 to 6 months | One major operation |
| Duration of relief | Up to 5+ years | Little evidence beyond 6 months | Weeks to a few months | 15 to 20+ years |
| Recovery time | 24 to 48 hours | 24 to 48 hours | 24 to 48 hours | 3 to 6 months |
| Anaesthetic | Local | Local | Local | General + nerve block |
| Hospital stay | Day case | Day case | Day case | 1 to 3 nights |

Who Arthrosamid® is , and isn't , for.
A face-to-face consultation with one of our orthopaedic consultants is the only way to know for sure whether Arthrosamid® is appropriate for your knee. As a guide:
You may be a candidate if
- Adults with diagnosed knee osteoarthritis
- Pain not adequately controlled by physiotherapy, weight management or oral analgesia
- Patients wanting to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery
- Patients in whom previous HA or steroid injections have stopped working
- Patients who are not yet eligible for, or want to avoid, joint replacement
Arthrosamid® is not suitable if you
- Active skin infection at or near the knee
- Active joint infection or severe inflammation
- Previous treatment with a different non-absorbable injectable / implant
- Knee replacement (alloplasty) or foreign material already in the knee
- Knee arthroscopy within the past 6 months
- Haemophilia or uncontrolled anti-coagulant therapy
Important: There is no cure for osteoarthritis. Treatment with Arthrosamid® may reduce or relieve knee pain, but the underlying arthritis can still progress. Your consultant will discuss expected outcomes and any risks at consultation.
