Understanding Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition primarily affecting the central face - the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It typically develops after age 30 and is more common in fair-skinned individuals. The exact cause is unknown, but factors including genetic predisposition, immune dysfunction, and the skin's vascular and inflammatory responses are implicated. Demodex mites, which live on everyone's skin, may also play a role in some cases.
Rosacea tends to fluctuate, with periods of flare and relative calm. Without treatment, it often progresses over time. There are several subtypes: erythematotelangiectatic (primarily redness and flushing), papulopustular (with acne-like bumps), phymatous (skin thickening, especially on the nose), and ocular (affecting the eyes). Many patients have features of multiple subtypes.
