Understanding Warts and Verrucae

Warts are benign skin growths caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). There are over 100 types of HPV, with different strains causing warts in different locations.

Common warts typically appear on the hands and fingers as rough, raised bumps. Plantar warts (verrucae) occur on the soles of the feet and may grow inward due to pressure, often becoming painful. Plane (flat) warts are smooth and flat-topped, often appearing on the face or hands.

The virus spreads through direct contact or via contaminated surfaces, particularly in warm, moist environments like swimming pools. While many warts resolve spontaneously as the immune system fights the virus, this can take months to years, and some warts persist indefinitely without treatment.
