When to Consider Surgery

Surgery is recommended when the mechanical 'catch' prevents you from living an active life. You are a candidate if:
• You have sharp pain during squatting, lunging, or pointing your toes.
• You have tried rest, physiotherapy, and injections without lasting relief.
• X-rays or MRI confirm bone spurs or an Os Trigonum causing impingement.
• You are an athlete whose performance is limited by ankle 'stiffness' and pain.
• You have a mechanical block that cannot be stretched away through physio.

What is Ankle Impingement?

Ankle impingement is generally categorized by where the 'pinch' occurs:
Anterior (Front) Impingement: Often called 'Footballer’s Ankle.' It is usually caused by bone spurs (osteophytes) forming on the front of the shin bone or ankle bone. These spurs collide when the ankle is flexed upwards.
Posterior (Back) Impingement: Common in ballet dancers or cricketers. It involves structures at the back of the ankle, sometimes including an extra bone called an 'Os Trigonum,' becoming compressed when the foot is pointed downwards.

At Kinvara Hospital, we use high-resolution MRI and standing X-rays to visualize these bony blockages and any associated 'synovitis' (inflammation of the joint lining). If conservative measures like activity modification or injections fail, our surgeons use arthroscopy to 'debride' or clear out the joint, removing the physical obstruction.
