Am I a Candidate for Rotator Cuff Repair?

Surgery is generally recommended for patients with a 'full-thickness' tear or a partial tear that has failed to improve with six months of physiotherapy and steroid injections. If your pain is associated with significant weakness or if the tear was caused by an acute injury (like a fall), early surgical intervention often leads to better outcomes. However, not all tears require surgery; very small tears in older, less active patients can often be managed conservatively. During your consultation at Kinvara Hospital, we use MRI or Ultrasound imaging to assess the size of the tear and the quality of the muscle. If the muscle has turned to fat (atrophy), a repair may be less successful, making a prompt diagnosis essential.

What is Private Rotator Cuff Repair Yorkshire?

Rotator cuff repair is a surgical intervention designed to reattach a torn tendon-most commonly the supraspinatus-to its original position on the humerus (upper arm bone). The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that wrap around the shoulder joint, providing the stability needed to lift and rotate your arm. When these tendons tear, they do not heal on their own because the muscle constant pulls the tendon away from the bone.

At Kinvara Hospital, we primarily perform this as an arthroscopic procedure. Through several 5mm incisions, a high-definition camera (arthroscope) is inserted to visualize the damage. The surgeon uses specialized 'suture anchors'-tiny devices made of biocompatible material or metal-which are screwed into the bone. High-strength sutures attached to these anchors are then woven through the torn tendon and tied down, pressing the tendon firmly against the bone to facilitate biological healing. Often, this is combined with a subacromial decompression (shaving a small amount of bone from the acromion) to create more space and prevent the repaired tendon from catching or 'impinging' in the future.

Benefits of This Procedure

  • Significant reduction or total elimination of chronic shoulder pain, especially at night
  • Restoration of overhead strength and the ability to perform daily lifting tasks
  • Minimally invasive keyhole approach results in less scarring and reduced muscle damage
  • Prevents the progression of the tear, which could otherwise lead to 'cuff tear arthropathy'
  • High patient satisfaction rates for returning to sports and physical hobbies
  • Performed as a day-case procedure, allowing you to recover in the comfort of your own home

The Procedure

Rotator cuff repair is a precision day-case procedure. Our surgeons use advanced visualization technology to perform a structural reconstruction of your shoulder with minimal disruption to surrounding muscles.

  1. 1

Under general anaesthesia and a nerve block, three to four 5mm incisions are made. The joint is expanded with sterile fluid to provide a clear view through the arthroscope.

  2. 2

The surgeon cleans the 'footprint' of the bone where the tendon originally attached, removing any scar tissue or bone spurs that might interfere with healing.

  3. 3

Small suture anchors are placed into the humerus bone. The attached high-strength threads are passed through the edge of the torn tendon using specialized instruments.

  4. 4

The sutures are tied, pulling the tendon back into firm contact with the bone. The incisions are closed with small stitches or adhesive strips, and a specialized sling is applied.
