When is Surgery Necessary?
Surgery is strongly recommended if:
• There is a complete tear (Grade 3) with significant joint opening on stress testing.
• An imaging scan confirms a Stener Lesion (displaced ligament).
• There is an 'avulsion fracture' where a large piece of bone has been pulled away with the ligament.
• Chronic instability is causing pain and weakness months after the initial injury.

What is Skier's Thumb?
The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is a strong band of tissue that prevents the thumb from bending too far sideways. When this ligament is stretched or torn, the joint becomes unstable.
A critical complication often associated with complete tears is a Stener Lesion. This occurs when the torn end of the ligament gets trapped behind a nearby tendon (the adductor aponeurosis). If this happens, the ligament cannot heal on its own because the two ends are no longer touching. At Kinvara Hospital, we use specialized clinical 'stress tests' and high-resolution ultrasound or MRI to determine if a Stener lesion is present, which dictates whether surgery is immediately necessary.
