Am I a Candidate for Surgery?

Not everyone with trigger finger needs immediate surgery. Many cases resolve with a steroid injection, which reduces inflammation and 'shrinks' the tendon nodule.
You are an ideal candidate for surgical release if:
• You have had one or more steroid injections that failed to provide permanent relief.
• Your finger is 'locked' in a bent position and cannot be straightened.
• The pain and clicking are significantly interfering with your job or sleep.
• You have diabetes, which often makes trigger finger more resistant to non-surgical treatments.

What is Trigger Finger?

Your tendons act like long cables connecting the muscles in your forearm to the bones in your fingers. To keep these cables in place and working efficiently, they pass through a series of tunnels called 'pulleys.' Trigger finger occurs when the first tunnel (the A1 pulley) at the base of the finger becomes inflamed or thickened.
As the opening of the tunnel narrows, the tendon can no longer slide through smoothly. It may bunch up or develop a small lump (nodule) that gets caught on the edge of the pulley. This creates the 'trigger' effect. While the exact cause is often unknown, it is more common in individuals with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or those whose work involves repetitive gripping. At Kinvara Hospital, we use a combination of physical examination and clinical history to diagnose the condition, ensuring a precise treatment plan that addresses the root cause of the friction.
