What is Accessory Navicular Syndrome?
Not all accessory navicular bones are the same. They are classified into three types which dictate the likely symptoms and treatment:
• Type 1: A tiny, pea-sized bone located inside the posterior tibial tendon. It rarely causes significant issues.
• Type 2: A larger, heart-shaped bone connected to the navicular by a bridge of cartilage (synchondrosis). This is the type most likely to cause pain as the bridge can become inflamed or fractured.
• Type 3: An extra-large prominence where the bone has fused to the main navicular, creating a large 'horn-shaped' bump that often rubs against shoes.
At Kinvara Hospital, we look at the interaction between this bone and your posterior tibial tendon. Because this tendon is the main support for your arch, an accessory bone can weaken the arch structure, leading to flat feet. Our treatments aim to relieve the pressure on this tendon and remove the physical obstruction. At Kinvara you can also read about ankle impingement and Achilles tendon pain.
