Am I a Candidate for Surgery?

Not all unstable elbows require surgery. Many cases of 'simple' dislocation recover with a short period of rest and physical therapy. However, you are likely a candidate for surgery if:
• You have had more than one dislocation episode.
• Your elbow clicks or 'shifts' painfully during daily activities like pushing out of bed.
• MRI shows a complete tear of the LUCL or MCL ligaments.
• You have associated fractures (radial head or coronoid) that make the joint inherently unstable.
• You are an athlete who cannot perform your sport due to a feeling of joint 'looseness'.

Our All-Inclusive Promise

  • Fixed-price packages for ligament repair or reconstruction
  • Consultant surgeon and anaesthetist fees included

What causes Elbow Instability?

The elbow joint is held together by a combination of bone shapes and strong ligaments. Instability occurs when these 'restraints' fail. The most common type is Posterolateral Rotatory Instability (PLRI), usually caused by an injury to the Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) complex. Another common form is Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) instability, often seen in athletes who perform repetitive overhead throwing.

At Kinvara Hospital, we categorize instability as acute (immediately after an injury) or chronic (persisting over months). Because the elbow is one of the most stable joints in the body, any feeling of 'looseness' is a sign that the primary stabilizers have been significantly compromised. Our diagnostics include specialized 'stress' X-rays and high-resolution MRI scans to pinpoint which specific ligament needs attention.
