Knee ligament injuries, particularly to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), are common in pivoting sports and cause instability, swelling, and long-term risks if untreated. At Kinvara Private Hospital in Rotherham, our specialist knee surgeons understand the frustration and uncertainty knee ligament injuries bring, especially for athletes and active individuals.

The knee has four major stabilising ligaments: the anterior cruciate (ACL), posterior cruciate (PCL), medial collateral (MCL) and lateral collateral (LCL). An injury to any of these causes pain, swelling and a feeling that the knee gives way. The ACL is the most commonly torn, usually from a non-contact pivoting or deceleration injury in football, netball, rugby, skiing or running.

At Kinvara Private Hospital in Rotherham, three consultant knee surgeons (Mr Janos Patko, Mr Andy Legg and Mr Ed Holloway) assess and treat the full range of single and multi-ligament knee injuries. We offer rapid-access MRI within 1 to 2 weeks of enquiry, accurate grading of the tear, and a treatment plan tailored to whether you are a high-demand athlete, an active worker or a patient who can manage their lifestyle around an unstable knee.

Not every ligament injury needs surgery. Isolated MCL tears and many partial PCL injuries heal with bracing and structured physiotherapy. A complete ACL tear in an active patient typically requires reconstruction. Complex multi-ligament injuries are handled by our specialist sports knee team. We see patients from Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Wakefield, Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region. 0% interest finance is available over 12 months through Humm for treatments over £500.

What is Knee Ligament Injuries?

Knee ligament injuries involve damage to the four major stabilisers: anterior cruciate (ACL), posterior cruciate (PCL), medial collateral (MCL), and lateral collateral (LCL). The ACL is most frequently torn, often from non-contact pivoting or deceleration forces, preventing anterior tibial translation.

MCL injuries occur from valgus stress (blow to outer knee), while PCL from dashboard impacts, and LCL from varus forces. Combined injuries affect multiple ligaments with associated meniscal or cartilage damage.

Partial tears may heal; complete ruptures cause instability and secondary osteoarthritis risk. Symptoms include immediate swelling (haemarthrosis), pain, and giving-way. At Kinvara Private Hospital, advanced MRI confirms tear grade and associated pathology, guiding whether conservative rehabilitation or surgical reconstruction is optimal.

Benefits of Treating Knee Ligament Injuries

  • Reduction in the pain, swelling and instability that follow a torn or stretched knee ligament.
  • Restoration of a stable, secure knee, removing the unsettling sensation of the joint giving way or buckling.
  • Improved joint stability that helps protect the cartilage and meniscus from further damage and reduces longer-term arthritis risk.
  • More comfortable sleep and daily movement once the swelling settles and the knee feels reliably supported again.
  • Reduced reliance on bracing and pain medication as strength and control are rebuilt through structured rehabilitation.
  • A guided return to sport, work and active hobbies, with most patients regaining strong, functional knee performance.
