In a total knee replacement, the surgeon removes the worn-out cartilage and a small amount of underlying bone to create a stable surface for the new components.

The prosthesis consists of three main parts: a contoured metal femoral component, a flat metal tibial baseplate, and a high-grade polyethylene spacer that acts as the new 'cartilage' to facilitate smooth gliding. In some cases, the underside of the patella (kneecap) is also resurfaced with a plastic button. The Procedure

Knee replacement surgery is a highly controlled, precision procedure typically lasting between 60 and 120 minutes. Our surgeons focus on anatomical alignment and soft-tissue balancing to ensure your new joint feels stable and moves naturally.

    A vertical incision of 15-20cm is made over the front of the knee to expose the joint. The surgeon carefully moves the patella aside to access the damaged femoral and tibial surfaces.

    Using high-precision cutting guides, the surgeon removes the worn-out cartilage and a thin layer of bone (approx. 8-10mm) from the femur and tibia to create a perfect fit for the prosthesis.

    Trial components are temporarily fitted to test the knee’s range of motion and ligament stability. Once perfect alignment is confirmed, the permanent metal components are secured to the bone, usually with bone cement.

    A high-grade plastic spacer is snapped into the tibial baseplate to provide a smooth bearing surface. The wound is closed with internal dissolvable sutures and external clips or waterproof glue, followed by a sterile compression dressing.
