Am I a Candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee replacement surgery is typically recommended for individuals whose quality of life is severely impacted by knee joint degeneration. Ideal candidates are those who experience persistent pain that interferes with sleep or daily tasks, and who have not found relief from conservative treatments such as physiotherapy, weight loss, steroid injections, hyaluronic acid injections or the new Arthrosamid® hydrogel injection. Patients who want to delay or avoid joint replacement may want to consider Arthrosamid® first, as a single injection has been shown to provide pain relief sustained at 5 years. While there is no strict age limit for knee replacement, the procedure is most common in patients aged 50 to 80. Medical criteria include radiographic evidence of advanced joint narrowing or bone-on-bone contact, often staged on the Kellgren-Lawrence scale for knee arthritis. Contraindications may include active systemic infection, severe vascular disease, or medical conditions that prevent safe anaesthesia. During your consultation at Kinvara Private Hospital, we will evaluate your overall health and bone density to ensure you are fit for the procedure.

What is Private Knee Replacement Surgery Yorkshire?

Knee replacement surgery, medically known as knee arthroplasty, is a sophisticated reconstructive procedure used to treat severe joint degeneration. Most commonly necessitated by osteoarthritis, the surgery involves resurfacing the ends of the femur (thigh bone) and the top of the tibia (shin bone). In a total knee replacement, the surgeon removes the worn-out cartilage and a small amount of underlying bone to create a stable surface for the new components.

The prosthesis consists of three main parts: a contoured metal femoral component, a flat metal tibial baseplate, and a high-grade polyethylene spacer that acts as the new 'cartilage' to facilitate smooth gliding. In some cases, the underside of the patella (kneecap) is also resurfaced with a plastic button. We use high-precision techniques and premium materials-often cobalt-chromium or titanium alloys-to ensure the new joint mimics the natural biomechanics of your leg. By restoring the proper alignment and spacing of the joint, knee replacement surgery effectively eliminates the friction that causes debilitating pain, allowing for a significantly improved range of motion and weight-bearing stability.

Benefits of This Procedure

  • Complete elimination of chronic 'bone-on-bone' arthritic pain
  • Restores up to 90-110 degrees of natural knee flexion within months
  • Corrects limb alignment issues such as 'bow-legged' or 'knock-kneed' deformities
  • Significant improvement in stability, reducing the risk of falls and joint giving way
  • Enables a return to low-impact activities like swimming, cycling, and hiking
  • Long-term durability with modern implants lasting 15 to 20 years or more

The Procedure

Knee replacement surgery is a highly controlled, precision procedure typically lasting between 60 and 120 minutes. Our surgeons focus on anatomical alignment and soft-tissue balancing to ensure your new joint feels stable and moves naturally.

  1. 1

A vertical incision of 15-20cm is made over the front of the knee to expose the joint. The surgeon carefully moves the patella aside to access the damaged femoral and tibial surfaces.

  2. 2

Using high-precision cutting guides, the surgeon removes the worn-out cartilage and a thin layer of bone (approx. 8-10mm) from the femur and tibia to create a perfect fit for the prosthesis.

  3. 3

Trial components are temporarily fitted to test the knee’s range of motion and ligament stability. Once perfect alignment is confirmed, the permanent metal components are secured to the bone, usually with bone cement.

  4. 4

A high-grade plastic spacer is snapped into the tibial baseplate to provide a smooth bearing surface. The wound is closed with internal dissolvable sutures and external clips or waterproof glue, followed by a sterile compression dressing.

Minor bleeding and bruising are normal. Significant bleeding is rare.

Pain or Discomfort

Common (managed with medication)

Some post-operative discomfort is expected. We provide comprehensive pain management.

Delayed Healing
