What is Private Partial Knee Replacement Yorkshire?
Partial knee replacement is a highly targeted surgical intervention designed for patients whose osteoarthritis is confined to a single section, or 'compartment,' of the knee joint. The knee is divided into three main compartments: the medial (inner), the lateral (outer), and the patellofemoral (front/kneecap). In roughly 25-30% of patients with knee arthritis, the wear is limited to just one of these areas. During a partial knee replacement, the surgeon only removes the damaged cartilage and a thin layer of bone from the affected compartment.
A small metal implant is then fixed to the end of the femur and the top of the tibia, with a durable high-density plastic (polyethylene) insert placed between them to allow for smooth movement. Because the healthy compartments are left untouched and the crucial Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) are preserved, the knee retains its natural stability and proprioception (the body's ability to sense the joint's position). This 'bone-sparing' approach is performed through a smaller incision than a total replacement, typically 7-10cm, resulting in less trauma to the surrounding soft tissues and a joint that mimics the natural biomechanics of a healthy knee.

Benefits of This Procedure
- Significantly faster recovery time compared to total knee replacement surgery
- Preserves the ACL and PCL for a more stable and 'natural' joint feeling
- Smaller surgical incision resulting in less scarring and reduced blood loss
- Reduced post-operative pain and a lower risk of surgical site infection
- Improved range of motion, often allowing for better flexion and kneeling
- Lower risk of post-operative complications like stiffness or blood clots
The Procedure
A partial knee replacement is a precision procedure typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes. Our focus is on meticulous ligament balancing and bone preservation to ensure the most natural joint function possible.
- 1
A small 7-10cm incision is made over the affected compartment (usually the inner knee). The surgeon carefully exposes the joint without disrupting the major ligaments or the healthy side of the knee.
- 2
Using specialized guides, only the damaged cartilage and a few millimeters of bone are removed from the end of the femur and the top of the tibia in the diseased compartment.
- 3
The metal components are trial-fitted to ensure they align perfectly with the knee’s natural movement. Once confirmed, they are secured to the bone using medical-grade bone cement.
- 4
A mobile or fixed plastic bearing is inserted between the metal parts to act as the new cartilage. The joint is thoroughly tested for stability before the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.
