Knee Arthritis in Rotherham
Knee arthritis, primarily osteoarthritis (the wear and tear form of degeneration), causes the protective cartilage to break down, leading to bone-on-bone friction, inflammation and progressive loss of function. At Kinvara Private Hospital in Rotherham, our consultant orthopaedic surgeons offer rapid access, a full clinical workup including weight-bearing X-rays and MRI where indicated, and a treatment plan tailored to the stage of your arthritis, your lifestyle and your goals.

Knee arthritis is the gradual wearing of the smooth cartilage that cushions the knee joint. As the cartilage thins, bone starts to rub on bone, the joint becomes stiff, swollen and painful, and everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs or kneeling become a struggle. Around 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 in the UK lives with osteoarthritis, and the knee is the most commonly affected joint.
At Kinvara Private Hospital in Rotherham, our consultant orthopaedic team treats the full spectrum of knee arthritis, from early symptoms to end-stage joint disease. We offer the complete ladder of options under one roof, including physiotherapy and weight management, image-guided steroid and hyaluronic acid injections, the new Arthrosamid® hydrogel injection (a one-time, non-surgical treatment with pain relief shown to last up to 5 years), knee arthroscopy, partial knee replacement and total knee replacement using a direct anterior approach where appropriate.
Most patients are seen within 1 to 2 weeks of initial enquiry. Self-pay packages include surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees with no hidden costs, and 0% interest finance is available over 12 months through Humm. We see patients from Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Wakefield and the wider Yorkshire region.
What is Knee Arthritis?
Knee arthritis is a long-term joint condition where the protective layer of cartilage on the ends of the femur, tibia and underside of the patella gradually wears away. As the cartilage thins, the joint space narrows, bony spurs (osteophytes) form, the synovial lining becomes inflamed (a process called synovitis), and the joint produces pain, swelling and stiffness.
The most common form is osteoarthritis, a wear and tear degeneration driven by age, body weight, previous injury, alignment and genetic factors. Other forms include rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition that attacks the synovial lining and typically affects both knees, and post-traumatic arthritis, which can develop years after a meniscal tear, ligament injury or fracture.
At Kinvara Private Hospital we grade your knee using the Kellgren-Lawrence system on weight-bearing X-rays (grades 1 to 4) and where appropriate add an MRI scan to assess the cartilage, menisci and ligaments in detail. Accurate staging guides the choice between conservative care, injection therapies (including Arthrosamid®), keyhole surgery or joint replacement.
