What is Peroneal Tendonitis?
The peroneal tendons run side-by-side behind the outer ankle bone. The *peroneus brevis* attaches to the fifth metatarsal (outer edge of the foot), while the *peroneus longus* runs under the foot to the big toe side. They work together to 'evert' the foot and provide balance. Tendonitis occurs when the protective sheath around these tendons becomes thickened or the tendon fibers themselves begin to fray due to repetitive friction against the bone.
