What is Rhinophyma?
Rhinophyma is a slowly progressive condition in which the skin of the nose becomes thickened, oily and enlarged, often with prominent pores and a knobbly, bulbous shape. It is widely understood to represent the late, phymatous stage of rosacea, though it can develop in people who have never had obvious flushing or spots. Men in their middle and later years are most commonly affected, but it can occur in women too.
While rhinophyma is not dangerous, it can be uncomfortable, alter the shape of the nose, and in more advanced cases interfere with breathing. Many people also find that it changes how they feel about their appearance, leading them to seek treatment after years of trying creams and tablets that have helped the redness but not the thickening.
Surgical reshaping aims to remove the excess overgrown tissue and recontour the nose so that it looks and feels more like it used to. Techniques may include electrosurgical decortication, CO2 laser, dermabrasion, or careful tangential excision, often used in combination. The underlying healthy skin then heals over the reshaped surface.
The benefits of this procedure include:
- Helps restore a more natural shape and contour to the nose.
- Can improve nasal airflow when overgrown tissue has narrowed the airway.
- Reduces the appearance of prominent pores, lumps and irregular surface texture.
- Often makes long-term skincare for rosacea easier to manage.
- Most patients find it has a positive effect on confidence and how they feel in photographs.
- Performed by a consultant plastic surgeon in a CQC-registered private hospital.

What does Rhinophyma involve?
Rhinophyma treatment is usually performed as a day case under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation for comfort. The exact steps depend on the technique chosen, but the overall pathway is similar.
Photographs, markings and a final discussion of the planned reshaping with you in the pre-operative area.
Local anaesthetic is gently infiltrated into the skin of the nose so the area is fully numb.
The overgrown tissue is carefully removed in layers using electrosurgery, CO2 laser, dermabrasion or excision, depending on what suits your nose best.
The surgeon refines the contour, paying close attention to the tip and sides so the nose looks natural in profile and from the front.
Any bleeding points are controlled and a non-stick dressing or ointment is applied to support healing.
You are observed for a short while in recovery and then discharged home the same day with clear written aftercare instructions.

How Long is
the Recovery
AFTER RHINOPHYMA?
In the first week, the treated skin behaves a little like a graze: it weeps slightly, then forms a soft crust as new skin grows underneath. You will be asked to keep the area clean and well moisturised with the ointment we provide, and to avoid picking at any crusts.
Most patients take around one to two weeks off work, depending on how visible the area is in their role. The skin is usually pink for several weeks and gradually fades over two to three months. Sun protection with a high SPF is essential during this time to reduce the risk of pigment changes.
We will see you back in clinic for wound checks and to make sure healing is progressing as expected.
When Will I See
the Final Results?
Most patients notice a clear difference in the shape and texture of the nose once the initial healing has settled, usually by around six to eight weeks. The final contour and skin tone continue to refine over three to six months as redness fades. While we aim for a natural, balanced result rather than a dramatic change, many patients tell us that their nose now reflects how they feel about themselves again. Results can be long-lasting, particularly when rosacea is well controlled, although some gradual change over years is possible.
