What is Scar Revision Surgery?

Scar Revision is highly customised based on the type, size, and location of the scar. For raised scars like hypertrophic and keloid tissue, the revision often involves surgically excising the old tissue followed by a meticulous, multi-layered closure to minimise tension.

For wide or restrictive scars, techniques such as Z-plasty or W-plasty are employed. These techniques involve creating small triangular flaps to change the scar's direction, aligning it with the skin's natural tension lines (Langer's lines) to make it less noticeable.

In cases of depressed or 'pitted' scars, we may combine excision with fat grafting or dermal fillers to restore volume. The primary goal is to exchange a high-visibility or restrictive scar for one that is thinner, flatter, and blends harmoniously with the surrounding skin.

The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Makes wide or depressed scars significantly less conspicuous.
  • Releases tight scar tissue (contractures) that restricts movement.
  • Flattens and softens abnormally raised hypertrophic and keloid scars.
  • Alleviates physical symptoms like itching, tenderness, or pain.
  • Realigns scars with natural skin folds for better camouflage.

What does Scar Revision Surgery involve?

Scar revision uses precise surgical techniques to reset the healing process and create a more aesthetic result.

The surgeon identifies the skin tension lines and marks the most favourable path for the new scar.

Old scar tissue is meticulously removed, and underlying tissue is released if it is tight or tethered.

The wound is closed using multi-layered, deep absorbable sutures to take all tension off the surface.

The skin is closed with fine sutures, and a specific scar management protocol (silicone/steroids) is initiated.

AFTER SCAR REVISION SURGERY?

Initial healing takes about two weeks. The new scar will look red or pink for several months; this is a normal part of the vascular healing phase. It is vital to avoid sun exposure on the new scar for 12 months, as UV light can cause permanent dark pigmentation (hyperpigmentation).

When Will I See
the Final Results?

While the surgical improvement is visible early on, the final result is not achieved until the scar has fully matured at the 12-month mark. Most patients see a dramatic reduction in scar width and height, and a significant improvement in the scar's overall texture and color.
