What is Tattoo Excision?
Tattoo Excision involves the surgical removal of the skin containing the tattoo pigment. The procedure is performed under Local Anaesthetic with or without sedation. For smaller designs, the surgeon performs a Direct Excision, removing the inked skin and meticulously suturing the edges to create a fine, linear scar.
For larger or wider tattoos, we utilize Serial Excision. This staged approach involves removing the tattoo in sections over several months, allowing the skin to naturally stretch (adaptive laxity) between procedures to ensure a tension-free closure.
In rare cases involving very large tattoos where the skin cannot be pulled together, a Skin Graft or Tissue Expansion may be required. The goal is always to align the resulting scar with natural skin tension lines (Langer's lines) for the most discreet finish. At Kinvara you can also read about scar revision, mole removal and skin tag removal.
The benefits of this procedure include:
- Immediate and complete removal of the tattoo in a single session (for most small designs).
- 100% effective on all ink colours, including laser-resistant greens, yellows, and whites.
- More cost-effective than a long course of laser treatments for small tattoos.
- Eliminates 'ghosting' or partial fading common with non-surgical methods.
- Predictable healing and a definitive result without years of waiting.

What does Tattoo Excision involve?
Surgical removal uses advanced plastic surgery techniques to replace unwanted ink with a clean, surgical finish.
The area is numbed, and the surgeon marks the tattoo boundaries relative to skin tension lines.
The tattooed skin is precisely excised, removing all ink pigments down to the dermal layer.
The surrounding skin is 'undermined' to create laxity and closed in multiple layers.
The surface is closed with fine sutures and supported with adhesive strips for optimal healing.

AFTER TATTOO EXCISION?
Sutures are typically removed after 7–14 days. You must avoid any activity that stretches the area for 4–6 weeks to prevent the scar from widening. Patients are advised to use silicone gel and perform scar massage once the wound is fully closed to ensure the best cosmetic outcome.
When Will I See
the Final Results?
The tattoo is gone immediately. The resulting scar will be red and firm for the first 3 months, but will gradually soften and fade to a pale, thin line by the 12-month mark. Most patients find this linear mark far more acceptable and easier to camouflage than the original tattoo.
