What is Areola Reduction?

Areola Reduction is a precision procedure focused on the aesthetic refinement of the breast. The surgery involves removing a circular 'ring' of the outer pigmented skin to decrease the overall diameter of the areola.

At our Yorkshire clinic, we utilize the 'Doughnut' or periareolar technique. The surgeon makes a circular incision around the nipple and a second, larger circular incision at the new desired boundary. The ring of excess pigment between these two marks is removed, and the surrounding skin is gently brought inward using a 'purse-string' suture. This method is highly effective because it places the final scar exactly at the junction where the dark areola skin meets the lighter breast skin, making it remarkably discreet once healed.

Crucially, the nipple itself and its underlying milk ducts and nerves are preserved, maintaining both sensation and the potential for breastfeeding. This procedure can be performed for both men and women, often under local anaesthetic with sedation, providing a permanent and natural-looking refinement.

The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Achieve a more symmetrical and aesthetically balanced breast appearance.
  • Corrects areolas stretched by pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes.
  • Permanently reduces areola diameter to match your breast size.
  • Minimal downtime with procedures often performed as a day case.
  • Discreet scarring hidden along the natural pigment border.

What does Areola Reduction involve?

Areola reduction uses specialized circular excision techniques to reshape and resize the pigmented area while preserving nipple function.

Precise marking of the target areola diameter and the excess skin ring to be removed.

Administration of local anaesthetic with sedation (or general anaesthesia).

Excision of the 'doughnut' ring of pigmented skin while carefully preserving the central nipple and milk ducts.

Closure using a deep purse-string suture to bring the skin together, followed by fine dissolvable surface stitches.

AFTER AREOLA REDUCTION?

Post-operative care is minimal but essential. You will have small dressings over the nipples for the first week. We advise keeping the area dry for 48 hours, after which you can shower normally.

It is normal to feel some temporary 'tightness' or altered sensation, which typically resolves within a few weeks. Your follow-up appointments at our Yorkshire clinic will ensure the incisions are healing beautifully.

Most patients find they can return to full gym activities and swimming after 6 weeks.

When Will I See
the Final Results?

The results of areola reduction are permanent and immediately visible. Once the initial redness of the scar fades (usually over 6-12 months), the transition between the areola and breast skin becomes very natural. You will have symmetrically sized areolas that are in proportion with your breasts, allowing you to feel more confident in intimate settings, swimwear, and fitted clothing.
