What is Breast Capsular Contracture Surgery?

Every breast implant recipient develops a 'capsule' - a thin layer of scar tissue that the body creates to wall off the foreign object. This is normal. However, in some patients, this capsule becomes abnormally thick and contracts. Using the Baker Grading Scale, we categorize this from Grade I (soft and natural) to Grade IV (hard, cold, painful, and distorted).

Breast Capsular Contracture Surgery aims to address Grade III and IV cases by surgically intervening. The procedure involves either a 'Capsulotomy' (making incisions to release the tension) or, more effectively, a 'Capsulectomy' (the total removal of the scar tissue). At our Yorkshire clinic, we often perform an 'En Bloc' removal for patients with suspected implant ruptures, removing the implant and the capsule entirely intact to prevent any silicone leakage into the body.

To reduce the high risk of recurrence, we may also relocate the implant to a new 'pocket' (moving it from above the muscle to below) and use Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) to provide an extra layer of biocompatible protection. At Kinvara you can also read about breast implant replacement, breast revision surgery and breast enlargement.

The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Immediate relief from the chronic pain and 'tightness' caused by the capsule.
  • Restores a soft, natural feel to the breast tissue.
  • Corrects visible 'balling' or displacement of the implant.
  • Opportunity to upgrade to the latest, safest cohesive gel implants.
  • Advanced 'no-touch' techniques used to minimize the risk of recurrence.

What does Breast Capsular Contracture Surgery involve?

The procedure focus is on the complete removal of the pathological scar tissue to create a fresh, healthy environment for the breast.

Careful access through the previous incision to minimize further scarring.

Total removal of the thickened scar tissue (capsulectomy) or en bloc removal if a rupture is suspected.

Creation of a new, clean implant pocket, often moving the placement from subglandular to submuscular.

Insertion of new, high-quality cohesive gel implants, potentially using ADM for added pocket support.

AFTER BREAST CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE SURGERY?

After surgery, the immediate 'pressure' you felt from the contracture should be gone. We provide comprehensive aftercare at our Yorkshire clinic, including wound monitoring and scar management advice.

You will notice your breasts becoming softer over the first 3 months as internal inflammation subsides. Long-term satisfaction is very high once the physical burden of the contracture is removed.

When Will I See
the Final Results?

The primary result of this surgery is the restoration of comfort. Visually, your breasts will appear more natural, with the 'ball-like' distortion replaced by a softer, more teardrop-shaped contour. By following our strict post-operative protocols, the risk of the capsule tightening again is kept to its absolute minimum, providing a long-term solution to this common implant complication.
