Elbow stiffness (arthrofibrosis) is the loss of joint mobility due to scar tissue or bone spurs. Surgical capsular release aims to remove these 'blocks' to restore your arm's ability to bend and straighten. This condition affects many people across Yorkshire, impacting their daily activities and quality of life. Early intervention and expert treatment are essential for achieving optimal outcomes.

At Kinvara Private Hospital in Rotherham, our experienced orthopaedic consultants provide comprehensive elbow stiffness & capsular release services using the latest minimally invasive techniques and evidence-based protocols. Our patient-centered approach ensures you receive personalized care tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle goals.

Serving patients across Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, and the wider Yorkshire region, we understand the impact that elbow conditions can have on your daily life. Our dedicated team is committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcomes through expert diagnosis, advanced treatment options, and comprehensive rehabilitation support.

Is a Capsular Release Right for You?

Surgery is considered when stiffness interferes with 'activities of daily living' (ADLs). You may be a candidate if:
• You have a 'functional arc' of less than 100 degrees (e.g., cannot reach your mouth and straighten your arm).
• You have completed 6 months of dedicated physiotherapy without improvement.
• Your stiffness is 'fixed' (mechanical) rather than just being caused by pain.
• You are motivated and able to commit to an intensive 3-month rehabilitation program.
• X-rays confirm that the joint surfaces themselves are still healthy (not advanced arthritis).

Our All-Inclusive Promise

  • Fixed-price packages for arthroscopic or open capsular release
  • All consultant surgeon, anaesthetist, and hospital fees included
  • Pre-operative 3D imaging (CT/MRI) as part of the plan
  • Integrated post-operative physiotherapy package
  • No hidden costs; transparent pricing for all self-pay patients

What causes Elbow Stiffness?

The elbow is notoriously 'reactive' to injury. Unlike other joints, it tends to form thick scar tissue and even new bone (heterotopic ossification) within the soft tissues very quickly after trauma.

There are two main 'blocks' to motion:
Intrinsic: Issues inside the joint, such as bone spurs (osteophytes) or loose fragments of cartilage.
Extrinsic: Issues outside the joint, where the capsule (the envelope surrounding the joint) becomes tight and scarred, acting like a shrink-wrap that prevents movement.
At Kinvara Hospital, we use specialized 'stress-view' X-rays and 3D CT scans to determine exactly what is stopping your movement. This allows our surgeons to plan a targeted 'release' that addresses both the bone and the soft tissue blocks simultaneously.
