When to Seek Treatment

Freiberg’s Disease is often mistaken for a simple 'metatarsal strain.' You should seek a specialist opinion if:
• You have pain in the ball of the foot that hasn't improved with 4-6 weeks of rest.
• You notice a 'hard' swelling or a bump on the top of your foot.
• Your toe feels stiff and 'locks' when you try to walk.
• High-heeled shoes or narrow footwear cause intense, sharp pain.
• You are an active teenager or young adult with unexplained forefoot pain.

What is Freiberg's Disease?

Freiberg’s Disease is classified as a form of avascular necrosis. When the blood supply to the end of the metatarsal bone is compromised, the bone becomes weak and can eventually collapse under the stress of daily walking.

It most frequently affects the second metatarsal because it is typically the longest and least mobile of the metatarsals, making it subject to the highest amount of pressure during activity. Over time, the smooth cartilage of the joint wears away, leading to stiffness and the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes).
